Cheap turpentine
“When art critics get together they talk about Form and Structure and Meaning. When artists get together they talk about where you can buy cheap turpentine” - Pablo Picasso.
We are living through a revolution of cheap turpentine. Using only tokens, you can bring almost any idea you have to life.
Critics will try and tell you the only thing that matters is taste. But these are the modern day examples of art critics talking form and structure and meaning. The more I think about this argument, that taste is the only thing that matters, the more I think it’s pure cope.
Only those with something to lose have an incentive to talk about taste, because they believe they are the ones who have “it”. We call these people gatekeepers. Critics, even.
The only thing that really matters is making more art, building more things and taking more swings at the fences.
Ignore the critics, and start painting.
